Max and Melly

About Us

A studio shaped by stories

Max & Melly is a design studio built on the belief that the objects we live with carry our stories.

A lineage of craft

Named for my great‑grandparents, Max and Melly, the studio continues a lineage that began in early 20th‑century Bavaria, where Max and his brothers Julius and Moritz Wallach created one of the era’s most influential design houses. Their textiles and interiors drew on handcrafts from across Europe — alpine botanicals, forest animals, and regional folk art — motifs that were visual anchors to the natural world and a way of life. The Holocaust shattered that world, but the designs endured.

An archive rediscovered

In recent years, hundreds of original Wallach silkscreens were re-discovered in a small town on the edge of the Bavarian Forest, preserved by a master printer whose family had collaborated with the brothers for decades. This extraordinary archive brought Wallach designs back into focus and led to the creation of the non-profit Wallach Project and later to Max & Melly, its commercial production partner.

Heritage, reimagined

Our first Wallach Collection draws from this archive: expressive, characterful designs shaped by the brothers’ passion for nature, folk art and handcrafts. In reviving these motifs today, we honour regional craft while giving it new colour and clarity — a contemporary expression of heritage made to live beautifully in the everyday.
